I'm sorry Mrs. Eckhart but the only way for me to turn in my essay is this so im copying and pasting it so it won't be later than it already is. It isnn;t perfect but anything is better than nothing right?
Some people believe Torvald Helmer is a controlling and a chauvinist but they have him all wrong. He is a hardworking man with a stable successful career. Torvald cares about his family and just wants what‘s best for them. He is also a normal man who lived his life just like any average man in society at that time. Just because he has issues with his wife and with his daily life doesn’t mean he’s a bad person because everyone goes through these troubles now and then. He is a misunderstood man who falls victim to stereotypical opinions by readers.
Torvald has a career in a bank in Norway around the 1870’s. He was promoted early in the book and had some changes to make. He has a co-worker (Nils Krogstad) that disrespects him on a daily basis. They used to be friends long ago but times have changed and their old customs no longer apply especially at work. Krogstad calls Torvald by his first name which is blatantly disrespectful and not only that but he is a criminal. With these daily problems any person would be a little edgy when they come home. Above all this when Torvald submits his notice for Krogstad she urges him to “call it back” (Act 2 line 6 page 1050). This acts like an insult to Torvald but above all he forgives her because it is kin to his nature.
Torvald is all about the family, he loves his wife and children and will do anything to keep them safe, physically as well as financially. At Christmas time he offers to buy his wife gifts but she refuses. He asks her what she wants and she eventually replies money. Torvald knows that she is wasteful with money and will eventually lead them to a crisis. Also he looks out for his wife’s health. Some may say that his restriction on macaroons maybe controlling but for a good reason nonetheless. He simply doesn’t want his wife to catch diabetes. Imagine if he didn’t restrict her and with the fact that she constantly goes behind his back and “munches” them she would eat even more and would catch an acute case of this ailment. Like any loving couple participants have pet names for each other, it’s only natural. He refers to his wife by these names because they signify her personality and self beauty. His wife is a well known liar because of the whole thing with Krogstad and forging her father’s signature. So he may seem controlling sometimes but he is only trying to keep his wife in-line (as she clearly needs to be kept) so she won’t have a bad impact on herself as well as the children.
Torvald is a man who lives in a down-to-earth kind of way. He lives “in the context of society” because he (being in the position that he is in) needs to be respected by not only his co-workers but by his family and society period. A man who is not respected gets humiliated and will not be successful. No one wants to look like a dead-beat because that also has a bad influence on his children as well as him and his wife’s personal image (not that she needs any help in spoiling that). He needs to look out for himself as well as his family to keep them together.
In conclusion people’s allegations of Torvald being a controlling chauvinist is utterly insane because he is a decent, hardworking man who deserves respect and love. His wife leaving him is just a sign that shows he is not the problem. He has done everything he possibly can do for her and she ignores his suggestions (macaroons), cheats on him, and breaks the law behind his back. For her to say all that was for him is balderdash, it was for her and only her. She is the only one making her self look helpless so she can cover up her own flaws. Once again as I have proven Torvald is misunderstood by readers because the text is designed to give you the once-sided story and forces you to not want to look at the other side. If people learn to just read between the lines and use pros and cons to analyze possible reasons for Torvald’s behavior they would retire or at least reconsider their allegations of chauvinistic properties in his personality. You can’t judge a book by it’s cover and that universal rule works on everything including fictional characters.
